GREAT BRITAIN. Marriage of William of Orange and Mary of England Silver Medal, 1641. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
MI-287/100; Eimer-137; van Loon-II, 251. By J. Blum. Commemorating the royal marriage. Obverse: William and Mary standing facing one another, clasping their right hands; in background, countryside scene with palace at a distance; above, radiant dove between two cherubs each among the clouds and presenting the couple with laurel wreaths; Reverse: Pax standing left, presenting an olive branch to Pallas standing right; behind to left, Bellona and fallen soldier among pile of weapons and military ensigns; between, cherub standing left, holding arrows; behind to right, Ceres standing left, holding basket of flowers. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just a single example, this deeply toned, near choice piece offers dazzling eye appeal and some underlying brilliance. A few light marks are noted, but none are distracting. A great type of Dutch manufacture, featuring not the William III and Mary II who would come to the English throne following the Glorious Revolution, but a different William and Mary--the parents, in fact, of that William III of Orange.
