PERSIA, Achaemenid Empire. temp. Artaxerxes II to Darios III. 4th century BC. AR Obol(?) (10mm, 0.64 g, 12h). Uncertain mint in western Asia Minor (Ionia or Caria?). Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, holding spear and bow / Head of Satrap right, wearing bashlyk. BMC 25 (Mallos); Babelon, Perses 191 (Tarsos); Brindley 84 (Ionia or Caria); Sunrise 92 (Uncertain Cilicia). Toned, a little off center, test cut on edge. VF.

This issue has traditionally been assigned to Cilicia, but the characteristics of the flan and the style is unlike the Achaemenid period obols from that region. The obverse type more closely resembles the "Ionian map" issues, but there is also a stylistic similarity to the Achaemenid king/Horeman issues given to Caria.
