Y. 28a.5.In 1897 Japan demonetized the silver one Yen and Trade Dollars, with many of them melted to provide bullion. However, some 20 million one Yen coins and Trade Dollars were countermarked with the character Gin (silver) and shipped to Taiwan, Korea and Southern Manchuria. The countermark was to indicate that the coin be treated as bullion. Countermarks on the right were done in Tokyo, and on the left in Osaka.Countermarked right, on Yen (KM. Y.
