This was a response to the attack on Sardinia by Spain that violated the Treaty of Utrecht. The French (symbolized by the eagle) and the English (symbolized by Jupiter) as part of the Quadruple Alliance are noted on the medal. The actual victory was achieved by British admiral Sir George Byng.
