The design of the medal was not completed till long after the deaths of all four Heads of State depicted and commemorated upon it and, as a consequence, the dies were never hardened. However, an unknown but limited number of specimens were made for the collectors' market by the electrotype process, most often the obverse and reverse separate and issued framed, displayed side by side. In the process of manufacture, the electrotypes making this example have been backed so that, once joined, they make a solid and heavy presentation medal with a proper edge. It seems highly likely that Pistrucci oversaw the manufacture of these medals.
