4,200 specimens of the second medal were struck from the residue silver put aside for the manufacturing of the Waterloo medals issued to all who served at the battle. The bridge, designed by John Rennie, was originally to be called the Strand Bridge, but was changed by act of Parliament as 'a lasting record of the brilliant and decisive Victory achieved by His Majesty's Forces in conjunction with His Allies...' The bridge was opened on the second anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo by the Prince Regent, 'with ceremonious pomp', accompanied by the Duke of Wellington and many of his senior officers. Carlisle states that examples of the second medal 'were scattered in profusion among the assembled Multitude'. The bridge was demolished in 1938. Forrer [BDM.VI, 650 ff.] attributes the first medal to William Wyon working with Thomas Wyon Jr..
