The Pavilion Collection, Commemorative Medals, The Counterseal of the Great Seal of King George IV, 1820, a superb red wax proof impression of the seal, by Thomas Wyon Sr. (1767–1830), chief engraver of the seals; the King enthroned on King Edward's Chair, figures of Britannia, Scotia and Hibernia before him, Religion and Justice to his left and, to right, leaning on the throne, Athena, in lion-topped helmet, wide oak and olive wreath around with, at top, the crowned Royal arms, 150mm. [6 ins.], the whole in glazed and set in square ebonised frame (245mm. or 9 ins.), in excellent order
*ex Wyon Family Collection, to Allan Gairdner Wyon FRBS, RMS (1882-1962), the medallist, die- engraver and sculptor and, in later life, vicar in Newlyn, Cornwall. Bt. Sovereign Rarities, November 2018, who purchased it from his grandson.
In 1834 the actual counterseal silver matrix was presented by King William IV, to the Lord Chancellor, John Singleton Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst (1772-1863). It was subsequently sold at Christie's, 24 May 2018, lot 447.
