The Pavilion Collection, Commemorative Medals, George IV, a silhouette portrait, cast in high relief in brass, c. 1821, bust r., laureate and wearing his Coronation robes, 94.5 x 74mm., set on wood backing in thin oval frame; Paper souvenir, 'Presented Gratis with the Atlas Newspaper', c. 1826, compound or impress-printed in relief, by Whiting, in several muted colours, with central medallic bust of the king l., decorative border including Royal Arms and Lion on Crown emblems, approx. 125 x 150mm., in contemporary frame, in good order, scarce (2)
The paper souvenir is believed to be the first 'give-away' by any British newspaper and whilst purchased by the vendor as a Coronation souvenir, it cannot be so as issue No. I, vol. I, of The Atlas was published on 21 May, 1826. The form of embossed security printing was invented and originally patented by Sir William Congreve. His patents were acquired by Whiting & Branston (Engravers & Printers, Beaufort House, Strand, London).
