The Theatre of Variety in Catherine Street, London, was a minor playhouse in the vicinity of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (whose main entrance is in Catherine Street). The obverse is shared with the pattern medallic crowns, now believed dated 1828-29, by Merlen, for examples of which see Baldwin's of St. James's Auction 38, lots 1202, 1203, and ESC.265A & B; Bull 2353 & 2355.
