In 1828 Daniel O'Connell, with the help of the Duke of Wellington, then prime minister, had seen the introduction of a Catholic Relief Bill in spring 1829. The Protestants and, indeed, George IV, had long been opposed to such a Bill and a number of small societies were formed to try and establish the better side of their cause. The medal is believed to be for one such, a society formed in Dublin formed to help poor Protestants, especially in the North of Ireland.
