bt. Mrs I. Allen, June 2007
The Royal Society of Literature was founded on 17th June 1823 when the first general meeting was held in the rooms of the Literary Fund in Lincoln's Inn. It received its Royal Charter in 1825. George IV, as the first patron, assigned 1000 guineas to ten associates, and awarded two medals annually, each to the value of 10 guineas (interestingly he endowed the Royal Society 50 nguineas for each of two medals to be awarded annually). The Society's first President (and President throughout the reign of George IV), was Thomas Burgess (1756–1837) author and philosopher, Bishop (first) of St. David's and (second) Salisbury.
