In 1662 Pope Alexander VII's Corsican Guard had opened fire at the coach carrying Charles III de Créquy, the French Ambassador, killing and wounding several Frenchmen. The 'Pyramid of Infamy' was erected at the site in 1664 – it was demolished four years later.
