A Collection of Papal Medals and Coins, Leo XIII (1810-1878-1903), Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci, annual medal, year 24 [1901], in gold, by Francesco Bianchi, bust l, wearing zucchetto and stole, rev. memorial to Pope Innocent III in the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, 43.5mm., wt. 54.40gms. (Bartolotti E 901; M.850), in (slightly worn) red velvet case of issue, minor handling marks and scuffs, extremely fine and very rare
Innocent III had died suddenly at Perugia on 16 June 1216 and was buried in the city's cathedral. Pope Leo XIII had his remains transferred to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano in December 1891. The sarcophagus with its recumbent effigy, was carved by Giuseppe Lucchetti, whose name appears on the medal's reverse.
