This medal commemorates the inauguration of a deep well in Orvieto, sunk by Antonio da Sangallo. The medal was commissioned by the Pope in April 1534 and he was shown the dies on September 22nd. Cellini depicts the scene from Exodus 17. 6, and the reverse design is derived from the fresco by Raphael [1519] in the Vatican.
