In 1709 Annibale Albani was appointed Nuncio Extraordinary before the Emperor and other Catholic Princes meeting in Vienna, The Hague and Frankfurt. He was a celebrated patron of ecclesiastical literature and his library, a gallery of paintings and sculpture and, indeed, a cabinet of coins, are now all a part of the Vatican collection.
