William III (1694-1702), Pattern Farthing, 1698, in silver, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. Britannia seated left, date in legend, edge plain, 4.44g, 6h (BMC [Peck] 680), toned, very fine, the portrait pleasingly so.

The auctioneer's book for this unusual sale held by Knight, Frank and Rutley at their Conduit Street salerooms is now held by the V&A Museum. It reveals the lot originally contained a: 'Charles II, Pattern Farthing, 1665 QUATUOR MARIA &c, William III, Proof Farthing, 1698 [this coin]; and two Patterns or Medalets of William III and William and Mary, one reading NON. DEVIO, all fine and scarce'. The vendor was listed as 'S. + Son Pie, and the buyer: Messrs Spink and Son.
