Royal United Services Institute, Sir George Chesney Gold Medal, 1932, awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel Chichester de Windt Crookshank, for eminent work in advancing military science and knowledge, 79.05g, 18ct, light tone with iridescence in recesses, otherwise mint state, and very rare, the highest award granted by the RUSI, with only 35 issued in 120 years, in original Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent Street case.
Chichester de Windt Crookshank was born 18 October 1868 at West Bengal. He commissioned into the Royal Engineers in July 1887, being promoted to Captain in 1898, and shortly thereafter saw service in South Africa. He was wounded at Paardeberg in February 1900 and earned a 'mention' in Lord Robert's second despatch of September 1901. Returning to civilian life, he was elected Unionist Member of Parliament for Berwick and Haddington in 1924. Unseated at the 1929 General Election, he was returned for the seat of Bootle under the Second National Government of 1931-35. During this service he would be awarded this presitigious gold medal, the RUSI's 19th Recipient. Subsequent notable recipients includer Sir Winston Spencer Churchill (1950); Baroness Margaret Thatcher (2000) and the most recent recipients General (Ret'd) David Petraeus (2013); and Dr Henry Kissinger (2015). Chichester Crookshank died at East Lothian, Scotland, in October 1958.
