OSTROGOTHS. Theoderic. As king of the Goths, 474/5-493, or ruler of Italy, 493-526. AV Tremissis (15mm, 1.48 g, 6h). In the name of Anastasius I. Rome mint. Struck 491-518. D N ANASTA SIVS P P AVC, diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICTORIA ΛVCVSTORVM, Victory advancing right on ground line with pellet at each end, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; star to right; CONOB. Cf. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 25 (for type); COI 14 var. (PF not PP); MIB 10; cf. BMC Vandals 5-11; MEC 1, –. Toned, traces of deposits, slightly weak strike in centers. VF. Rare variety.

The legend with PP typically occurs at the other Italian mints for this issue, but this specimen lacks the requisite subsidiary symbols that should be present for these mints. Also, the style is more similar to the issues attributed to Rome.
