An important antecedent to the Venetian grosso were those coins issued in Milan in the name of the Emperor Henry VI (1190-7). 'The earliest ones - the coins with immobilized type and inscription continued to be struck after Henry's death weigh just over 2.0g, and were probably worth 12d. The Milanese grosso, however, circulated only in Lombardy and never attained the international reputation of its Venetian counterpart.' Grierson, p. 107.
