Born out of the coinage reform of 1278 the saluto d'oro 'was a beautiful coin coin of pure gold, weighing 4.32g, having on the obverse an admirable representation of the Annunciation and on the other the field of Naples-Jerusalem. The king took a personal interest in the design, rejecting the first patterns in June 1278 on the grounds that the obverse and reverse were not struck in the same plane and that the lettering was too crowded.'
