'Two of the main development in medieval European coinage, the introduction of silver coins larger than the penny and the reintroduction of gold coins, took place in the thirteenth century.... Silver grossi had two great advantages over the traditional deniers by reducing the number of coins involved in payments, and because they were initially of pure or almost pure silver they were acceptable beyond a state's frontiers in a way that few of the old coinages had been. Martino da Canale, a Venertain chronicler of the second half of the thirteenth century, was proad to claim that the Venetain ducat (grosso) 'cort parmi le monde por sa bonte.' Grierson, p.105.
