'In southern England the general pattern of the penny coinage remained that established in the last quarter of the eighth century, but its details were determined by changes in the balance of power between the various kingdoms. Canterbury retained its importance throughout the century, minting for the archbishops down to Plegmund (890-923), for the kings of Mercia and Kent alternately... and for the kings of Wessex thereafter.' Grierson, p. 47.
