From the Richard A. Jourdan Collection of Medieval European Coins, purchased from Andy Singer.

'The island of Rhodes was conquered by the Knights of St John, who had been evicted from Acre in 1291 and whose subsequent presence in Cyprus had raised many difficulties, in the years 1305-10. Folques of Villaret, the Grand Master responsible for the occupation, struck billion deniers and small grossi, the latter having as obverse types his kneeling figure and a patriarchal cross on steps. His successor Helion of Villeneuve continued this design, and eventually combined it with a reverse type pased on that of the Provencal giglliato... The new coins, of the same weight as their models, were struck over the next century.' Grierson, p. 174.
