DENMARK. Hardeknud (Knud III, the Hardy). As "Vice-King," circa 1026/8-1035. AR Penny (19mm, 1.05 g). East Danish standard. Uncertain mint and moneyer. Struck circa 1030-1035. + CVNNPICNNIIVITNIVII, serpent curling leftward / NCCIINTPNVTNBICII : I, open linear convex cross with pellet terminals and pellet center; arches of pellets in quarters. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 150; cf. Hauberg 1 (for type); Becker, Coinages p. 120-1. Toned, a few peck marks, slightly wavy flan. VF.

While most early Scandinavian issues are based on Anglo-Saxon coin types a few, such as this coin, which features a curled serpent or worm on the obverse, were local innovations. Due to the crude and incomprehensible legends on this particular example, it may in fact be a later issue from the time of Magnus the Good (cf. Hauberg 25).
