Marks "The History of Paper Currency in Australia" in The Royal Australian Historical Society, Journal and Proceedings, 1919 Vol.V Part III pp.105-151, particularly on p.145 where he notes...'Messrs. George Lloyd and Company, of the City Mart, George street, issued a pound note dated 1854, engraved by H.C. Jervis. It is after the style of the Australian Bank Notes ....It has several symbolical designs, (vignettes). The founder of this firm, Mr. George Alfred Lloyd was born in London in 1815, and came to Sydney in 1834. He opened a business establishment at Hinton, on the Hunter River, but in 1840 came to Sydney and set up business as an auctioneer. He entered Parliament, and was the first Postmaster-General in the Parkes Ministry, and afterwards held other portfolios. In 1887 he was appointed a Member of the Legislative Council; and died in 1897.'
