QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 3 reverse), - three clasps - Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. 1384 Tpr: F.H.Barnes. Steinaecker's Horse. Impressed. Hairlines and a few short scratches, otherwise good very fine.

Information from the book titled Steinaecker's Horsemen by William (Bill) Woolmore, p146, 'Barnes Frank Henry, Lance Corporal No.1384: Born Australia 20 April 1874. He had lived in Swaziland for some years and in June 1897 he attended Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Banquet which was held at the International Hotel in Bremersdrop. A reasonably competent cricketer, he played for Bremersdrop against a Civil Service XI in October 1898. Claimed previous service with IVR and Rimington's Guides but could not be found on the rolls. Enlisted in SH (Steinaecker's Horse) at Nomahasha on 7 May 1901 - age 27, miner, height 5'10", blue eyes, fair hair, no marks, address Durban. NOK: mother, Mrs Barnes, Abbotsford, Melbourne, Australia. Discharged at own request at Komati Poort on 22 January 1902. Served subsequently in the Imperial Military Supply Department. Qualified for the QSA medal with clasps Transvaal, SA 1901 & SA 1902.'(illustrated at Fig 74, p146 of above book)
