J.O.Cruise was a miner who wintered with the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition 1971 as a geologist at Mawson Station. During his service he sank a 45ft deep shaft in solid granite gneiss and excavated an additional 4,000 cu ft of rock to provide vaults for cosmic ray and seismic observatories. He also participated in expeditions to the Prince Charles Mountains and over sea ice in mid-winter.
