Thomas Wearne (1835-1914) was an engineer who established a business as an ironmonger in Sydney in 1865. He later also made safes and railway and tramway rolling stock, as well as locomotive and bridge components. He was forced into bankruptcy in 1889 after a dispute with government officials in relation to a large contract for locomotives. He did retain an interest in the manufacture of safes with his nephew.
