Fiji Government of Fiji 20 Pounds 1.9.1948 Pick 43d PMG Very Fine 20. A famed King George VI and British Commonwealth rarity, seldom seen due to its enormous buying power at the time. Almost all Commonwealth realms capped their banknote series with a 5 pounds denomination, with Fiji being a glaring exception. It is not known as to why Fiji issued both 10 and 20 pound denominations, but issuance was limited and the overwhelming majority of notes were redeemed by 1969. We have never offered this denomination in issued form, and only a few are known to exist. All six dates for this denomination feature the B/1 prefix, with this example having the fifth date and the serial number 42,937, which indicates how few examples were issued each year, and in grand total. At the time of cataloging, PMG has only graded three examples of this denomination: one from 1943 and two from 1948. Crisp paper is seen on this example, which still features deep coloring and strong embossing. An important opportunity to acquire of the key banknotes of the South Pacific and of the entire British Commonwealth series. From The Drs.
