Good Extremely Fine; loop removed.

Carl Peters (1856-1918) was a German coloniser who was instrumental in creating a German protectorate in East Africa (part of the modern republic of Tanzania). Peters became chairman of what became known as the German East-African Society (Deutsch Osta-Afrikanischen Gesellschaft). After giving up his position and returning to Germany in 1889, Peters decided to challenge Henry Stanely's expedition to 'rescue' Emin Pasha (1856-1892), a German explorer and governor of Egyptian Equatorial Sudan who was reputed to be trapped in his province by Mahdist enemies, Both expeditions were veiled attempts to claim land and access to the upper Nile, Stanley working for King Leopold of Belgium and Peters for Germany. Ultimately, Stanley was to reach Pasha a year after Peter's departure.
