Attica, Athens AR Tetradrachm. Circa 460-400 BC. Transitional issue. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with three olive leaves above visor and spiral palmette on bowl, round earring with central boss, and pearl necklace / Owl standing to right with head facing, olive sprig and crescent behind, ΑΘΕ before; all within incuse square. Cf. Starr Group V.B; Kroll 8; Dewing 1591-8; SNG Copenhagen 31. 17.20g, 24mm, 5h.

Near Extremely Fine.

From the inventory of a German dealer.

Whilst the long straight tail of this owl is a feature of the 440s and later, the fine depiction of Athena shares characteristics with earlier issues (see Starr Group V.B, series 5), suggesting this is an early transitional issue.
