ARCHITECTURAL MEDALS. Belgium - Italy. St. Mark's Basilica at Venice Bronze Medal, ND (1854). Geerts (Ixelles) Mint. CHOICE MINT STATE.
Ross-M145 (R1); van Hoydonck-65; Reinecke-52. 59mm. By Jacques Wiener. Obverse: Exterior view of the basilica from the southwest; Reverse: Interior view with a sightline down the nave, from an eyepoint located west of the choir and to the right side of the central aisle. Charming chestnut brown surfaces with a pleasing array of underlying luster in the fields. Some very light scratches to the far right of the cathedral on the obverse are noted, however.
With earlier forms of the structure falling victim to fire--a typical culprit in the destruction of churches--St. Mark's, a mix of Italo-Byzantine and Gothic, was rebuilt multiple times, with the current edifice being consecrated in 1117.
