ARCHITECTURAL MEDALS. Belgium - Italy. St. Peter's in the Vatican City Bronze Medal, 1857. Geerts (Ixelles) Mint. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Ross-M201 (R1); van Hoydonck-152; Reinecke-50. 59mm. By Jacques Wiener. Obverse: Perspective view of the eastern facade of the exterior of the Basilica, from a viewpoint just to the left of center; Reverse: Perspective view of the interior looking down the nave toward the baldacchino. Pleasing brown surfaces, with some underlying luster, though some deposits dull a bit of brilliance.

The Vatican Hill was traditionally held as the burial place of the apostle and martyr Peter, with a shrine eventually being constructed on top of this tomb. Later, upon converting to Christianity, Constantine I had a more elegant basilica instructed, an edifice which was augmented over the centuries, though not while also suffering some destruction. It now serves as the seat of the Holy See and is itself, following the Lateran Treaty of 1929, its own country.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $150.00- $250.00
