ARCHITECTURAL MEDALS. Belgium - Ottoman Empire (Turkey). Hagia Sophia at Istanbul Bronze Medal, ND (1858). Geerts (Ixelles) Mint. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Ross-M208 (R3); van Hoydonck-206; Reinecke-60. 59mm. By Jacques Wiener. Obverse: Interior view of the mosque's north nave; Reverse: A view of the mosque's central nave. One of the RARER and more interesting architectural medals within the series, this piece breaks from the usual formula of an exterior view on the obverse and interior on the reverse, with Wiener opting instead for two interior views. Deep brown surfaces with only a few lightly scattered marks.

The seat for the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople for over 1,000 years until the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, the Hagia Sophia was then re-purposed as an iconic mosque following the Ottoman conquest. Today, it stands as an edifice venerated by multiple religions owing to its rich historical significance.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $400.00- $600.00
