WORLD WAR I MEDALS. France - Germany - Great Britain. Battle of the Marne Bronze Medal, 1916. Paris Mint. MINT STATE.
Maier-231. 68mm. By Jules-Prosper Legastelois. Obverse: Jugate capped and uniformed busts right of the generals: Joseph Joffre, Michel-Joseph Maunoury, and Joseph Gallieni; Reverse: Marianne-Victory flying right, holding sword; battle scene below, with French and British forces repelling their German enemies. Light brown surfaces. A particularly powerful medallic issue, presenting a well rendered reverse design.

A turning point in World War I, the Battle of the Marne halted the German advance further into France, with British and French allied forces repelling their German counterparts to the northwest and saving Paris, but ultimately leading to prolonged trench warfare along the western front, a stalemate that was last for the remainder of the conflict.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $150.00- $250.00
