WORLD WAR I MEDALS. Germany - United States. Submarine Deutschland in America Cast Iron Cross, 1916. Uncertain mint in Baltimore. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
The Art of Devastation-94. 74x72mm. By Hans Schuler. Blackened Maltese cross, with corded border, 9 JULI / 1916, and central medallion on each side. Obverse: Bust of Captain Koenig left; Reverse: The submarine Deutschland sailing right with masts raised. Essentially as made, with a few light rust spots.

One of two German blockade runners, the Deutschland arrived in America at Baltimore for the first time in July 1916. As she was virtually empty, some of the ballast which she was carrying was used to produce commemoratives of the arrival, such as this cross.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $75.00- $150.00
