WORLD WAR I MEDALS. France - Germany - Great Britain. Battle of the Somme Silvered Bronze Medal, ND (ca. 1975). CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
The Art of Devastation-Unlisted. 68mm. After Marcel Delannoy. Obverse: Warriors right (representing France and Belgium), holding spears and shields; above, River god (representing the Sommer River) reclining left, resting elbow upon overturned urn from which liquid flows; Reverse: Legend in four lines. Edge: Plain. Quite brilliant, though a hint of light rub on the high points is noted.
From a series of restitution issues celebrating famous medallic art from World War I, this piece presents Delannoy's sublime Art Deco design featuring personifications of France and Belgium in unison in their defending of one another against the German aggressor.
From the Richard Jewell Collection.
Estimate: $60.00- $100.00
