WORLD WAR I MEDALS. France. Women of the Red Cross Bronze Plaque, ND (ca. 1920). Paris Mint. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
By Henri Allouard. 69x52mm. Nurse assisting wounded soldier to walk; oak and laurel branches below; Reverse: Victory, holding laurel and olive branch, flying over fallen nurse below; in background, buildings engulfed with flames and rising sun on the horizon. Lighter mottled brown surfaces, with a few scattered spots and deposits.

Soldiers were not the only ones to suffer injury or even loss of life during World War I. Nurses, as well as medical professionals in general, were oftentimes at or near the front lines providing care, putting them in very similar danger as those soldiers whom they were treating. These plaques were issued and intended to be awarded to such nurses who suffered so much.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $100.00- $200.00
