KARL GOETZ MEDALS. China - Germany - Japan. Message for Japan Cast Bronze Medal, 1914. Munich Mint. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Kienast-139. 57mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Man with stereotyped features revealing mask; seven line inscription below translating to "your true face does not surprise us, he who can be had for hire and goes marauding will receive a black eye in addition to his yellow skin in the German Kiauchau"; Reverse: German soldier repels three-headed hydra with stereotyped features. Mottled darker brown surfaces, with some lighter highlights standing out.

Germany controlled Jiaozhou Bay (then called Kiauchau) as a colonial port in China from 1898 to 1914. Following the outbreak of World War, the Chinese government cancelled Germany's lease on the Kiauchau, with Japan poised to wreak havoc and see that the Germans left. This is one of many Goetz satirical medals throughout his series stereotyping ethnic features.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $300.00- $450.00
