KARL GOETZ MEDALS. Germany - Great Britain. Murder of the U-41 Cast Bronze Medal, 1915. Munich Mint. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Kienast-163. 57mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Fist emanating from the seas; banner with British standard and U - 4 - 1 in quarters; Reverse: German sailor seeking help in the seas; in foreground, British ship revealing inverted (distressed) American (neutral) standard. Mostly darker brown surfaces with some lighter highlights to the devices.

In September 1915, the HMS Wyandra (a British ship pretending to be a neutral American ship, the HMS Baralong) caught the U-41 in a compromising position, sinking the German submarine. At that time, the rules of war allowed for ships to be halted, boarded, and contraband seized, though the ship not being destroyed. In so doing, the submarines that surfaced would also not be targeted. In this instance, the British ship flew a false flag, then targeted the German submarine, enraging the German Empire.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $150.00- $250.00
