KARL GOETZ MEDALS. Germany - Great Britain - Italy - United States. Abuse of Neutral Flags Cast Bronze Medal, 1915. Munich Mint. CHOICE MINT STATE.
Kienast-165. 57mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Death (as a skeleton) standing left in ship, head right, wearing admiral's attire and holding Italian and United States standards; below, Sir Edward Grey seated on deck, clutching mast; three other standards fly to right; Reverse: Legend in eight lines within life preserver bearing motto of the Order of the Garter. Edge: Plain. Deep chocolate brown surfaces, with an alluring glossy nature and a good deal of brilliance remaining.

The practice of flying false flags in order to evade German attack or to surprise German vessels was a practice by Great Britain alluded to by Goetz in this medal, mocking Sir Edward Grey, then British Foreign Secretary.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $150.00- $250.00
