KARL GOETZ MEDALS. Germany - Italy - Montenegro - Russia. Nikita's Daughters of Fate Cast Iron Medal, 1916. Munich Mint. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED DETAILS.
Kienast-189. 81mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: The daughters of Nicholas I of Montenegro as The Fates, with each daughter's name inscribed below them on the pediment upon which they stand: Militza (wife of Grand Duke Peter of Russia), holding torch, Stana (wife of Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia) holding key surmounted by skull, and Elena (Queen of Italy) holding serpent; Reverse: Three hissing serpents entwined about bloody sword pointed left. Edge: Mount removed at 12 o'clock, otherwise plain. Pleasing deep charcoal gray surfaces, with charming relief and solid detail.
Here Goetz alludes to the downfall of Montenegro as being the result of the king's daughters marrying into enemy families--namely Italy (who had an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Germany, but instead chose neutrality) and Russia (who was on the side of the allied powers).
From the Richard Jewell Collection.
