KARL GOETZ MEDALS. France - Germany - Great Britain - Italy. The Hour of Reckoning Cast Bronze Medal, 1919. Munich Mint. MINT STATE.
Kienast-225. 90mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: The allies, headed by Clemenceau of France, present the Treaty of Versailles (adorned with a skull and crossbones) to Count von Brockdorff-Rantzau (representing the German government); Reverse: Chancellor Scheidemann standing right, denouncing the treaty which he holds, and from which serpents emanate. Edge: Plain. Light brassy-brown surfaces. An impressive and bold specimen.

Though happy for the war to be over, the terms of the Treaty of Versailles were seen in Germany as being incredibly harsh, with sentiments toward the allies being extremely low. Goetz himself shows his incredulous feelings toward the "peace" achieved, with the terms represented though such monstrous (skulls and serpents) imagery.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
