KARL GOETZ MEDALS. France - Germany - United States. The Circus Games oval Cast Bronze Medal, 1920. Munich Mint. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Kienast-231. 111x69mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Biga of donkeys left, driven by Clemenceau, beating drum, and with Woodrow Wilson, holding tablet; behind, Kaiser Wilhelm II being led by French colonial troop; Reverse: French troops leading German generals left; German eagle to right, perched upon scroll reading ARTIK[EL] 227-230. Edge: Plain. Light brown surfaces, with a few darker areas throughout.

Following the treaty of Versailles and the provisions set forth in articles 227-230, the trials of the former Kaiser and German generals involved in the war were demanded along with their extradition for such purposes. Here, Goetz is satirizing such events as a circus for the world to watch, parading the defeated as a spectacle for all to see.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $300.00- $450.00
