KARL GOETZ MEDALS. France - Germany. The Robber's Court Cast Bronze Medal, 1923. Munich Mint. MINT STATE.
Kienast-296. 61mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Marianne (personification of France) seated right on coal from the Ruhr, holding whip and reversed sword; to right, German fists raised defiantly in protest; Reverse: Two chained German forearms crossed in defiance; swords in background; below, sack of coins spilling out to the left (representing the billions in fines rendered unto the Germans). Edge: Plain. Rich brown surfaces, with rather bold relief to the design. Some lighter spotting on the upper part of the obverse is noted for completeness.

This type refers to Germany being held in default of reparation payments to the allies--notably France--for which reason the allied occupation of the Ruhr Valley--the heart of German industry--commenced. What ensued was martial law being declared by France, with confiscation of financial institutions and further confrontation between Germans in protest and their French occupiers. When German employees at an automobile manufacturer refused to give vehicles to the French as part of their repayment plan, the employees were tried at court and given extremely stiff financial and imprisonment sentences.

From the Richard Jewell Collection.

Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
