Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus (died 217 AD). AR Denarius, Rome mint, c. 207-211 AD. D/ IVLIA AVGVSTA. Draped bust right. R/ FORTVNAE FELICI. Fortuna seated left, holding cornucopiae and rudder on globe. RIC (Sept. Sev.) 553; C.58. AR. g. 4.19 mm. 22.00 Great metal, exceptionally overweight and broad flan. An outstanding example, from masterly engraved dies, with a wonderful portrait. Lovely light toning. About FDC.

Possibly among the heaviest and finest specimens known. "Fortuna Felix " is the Fortuna who has made Julia empress. In striking such a type Julia, as often, claims a more definitive share in rule than most empresses do. Severus married her for her imperial horoscope and seems to have admitted her claim to a certain share in the Empire when won (RIC IV, part I, pl. 74).
