LESBOS, Eresos. 4th-3rd centuries BC. Æ (10.5mm, 1.46 g, 12h). Head of female left / Kithara; uncertain symbol (plectron?) to left, EPEΣ[I?] to right. R-P&L –; SNG Arikantürk II –; SNG Ashmolean –; SNG Copenhagen –; SNG von Aulock –; HGC 6, –. Dark green patina, slightly off center on obverse. VF. Extremely rare.
Although this particular issue is missing from the 9 series R-P&L place in the Greek period, the types are individually attested. The obverse of Series VI features a female head with the same features as here, but facing right, while the reverse of Series VIII, Group 2 features a lyre with the city ethnic within a wreath. Thus this issue fits well into the scheme of the coinage at Eresos, but its placement relative to the known series remains uncertain.
