KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.88 g, 1h). Uncertain mint. Struck circa 297/6-282/1 BC or slightly later. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield; transverse spear in background; to inner left, head of lion left above monogram; monogram on throne. Thompson –; Müller –; cf. HGC 3, 1750; SNG Berry 400 (same dies); NFA IV, lot 129 (same dies); CNG E-421, lot 32 (same dies; hammer $1000). Lightly toned, edge marks, reverse brightly polished. VF. Very rare.

The SNG Berry and NFA coins are listed as posthumous issues of Lysimacheia mint. The designation of this issue as posthumous is predicated on Newell's setup of the trays in the ANS, but their collection is far from complete, and the absence of particular issues does not necessitate placing them after Lysimachos' death. Regarding the mint attribution, the lion head symbol is commonly associated with issues of Lysimacheia, but this is only conjectural. In fact, even Newell placed an issue with this symbol at Amphipolis (Thompson 186). The style of the dies used for striking this issue is not very similar to the issues Newell placed at Lysimacheia, so it is likely not from that mint.
