JAPAN. Mameita-gin, ND (1601-95). Keicho to Genroku. VERY FINE.
13.48 gms. Hartill-9.5. Unusually large and fine, with casting sprue still attached. Numerous chop marks. Included is certificate of authenticity no. 29821 from the JNDA.

Hartill (2011) comments, "Chogin are long oval silver pieces, usually of very debased silver.... Their nominal weight was 43 momme, but owing to the crude way in which they were made, they frequently did not weigh as much as this. To make up the deficiency, smaller pieces of silver of various weights were used in conjunction with them. These are known as Mameita-gin (Bean Money) because of their rounded shape.... Mameita can have a stamp on just one side...or both sides."

Estimate: $800.00- $1200.00
