THAILAND. Rama IX 50th Anniversary Gold & Platinum Bimetallic Medal, BE 2539 (1996). NGC PROOF-63 Ultra Cameo.
49 mm; 115 gms. Mintage: 150. Obverse: Facing portrait of young Rama IX; Reverse: Royal seal. A RARE and very popular medal among those who are aware of its existence, produced to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Rama IX's time on the throne. Struck in gold and platinum (the only such instance that an official Thai medal has been made in this composition), these medals were original sold by the mint for 500,000 Baht and were only offered to pre-order customers. Today, offerings are few and far between, with the last such public offering bringing the equivalent $45,000 in an auction in Thailand. This example, rather pleasing in appearance, displays extreme cameo features due to bold frost on the designs and deep, reflective fields. While the obverse is virtually pristine, a few light hairlines do appear on the reverse, accounting for the assigned grade. For the collector seeking important Thai numismatic issues of the last century, this piece certainly stands out and should generate much excitement.

Estimate: $20000.00- $30000.00
